A leftover stump is more than an eyesore. It is a mowing obstacle, a trip hazard, an attractant for termites and carpenter ants near your foundation, and — for species that sucker, like hackberry and chinaberry — a source of endless regrowth.
We grind stumps of any size, from crepe myrtles to four-foot heritage oak stumps, and leave the area ready for turf, beds, or a replacement tree.
Why grinding beats leaving it (or digging it out)
Excavating a stump means a backhoe, a crater, and hauling a root ball. Grinding uses a carbide wheel to reduce the stump and major surface roots to mulch, which stays on site or is hauled away.
For replanting, we grind deeper and remove the grindings, then backfill with soil so a new tree has real rooting volume rather than a bed of decomposing chips.
- •Stump left behind by another company or a storm failure
- •Suckers sprouting from an old stump or root system
- •Mushrooms or insect activity in decaying wood near the house
- •Planning new turf, a patio, a fence line, or a replacement tree
Our process
- 1
Utility locate
We call in locates before grinding near property lines, irrigation, or utility runs — grinders do not discriminate.
- 2
Access check
Gate width determines the machine. We carry equipment that fits standard 36-inch gates as well as larger units for open access.
- 3
Grinding to depth
Standard grind is 6–10 inches below grade; replant-depth grinding goes 18+ inches and removes major lateral roots.
- 4
Grindings handled your way
Backfill the hole with grindings, haul them off and replace with topsoil, or leave a mulch pile — your call.
- 5
Cleanup
Rake, blow down hard surfaces, and leave the area level and ready for whatever comes next.

Local expertise
Austin's shallow limestone soils mean many stumps sit on rock. We check depth before committing to a replant-depth quote so you are not surprised.
Live oak root systems are wide and interconnected; suckering from a ground stump is common and we explain how to manage it.
In older neighborhoods like Hyde Park and Tarrytown, cast iron and clay utility lines run shallow — we grind conservatively and hand-dig where necessary.
What affects the price
| Stump diameter | Measured at grade, including the root flare. |
|---|---|
| Grind depth | Standard versus replant depth changes machine time significantly. |
| Access | Gate width and slope determine which machine can reach the stump. |
| Surface roots | Extensive root chasing adds time. |
| Grindings disposal | Haul-off and topsoil backfill cost more than leaving grindings in place. |
| Obstacles | Rock, fencing, irrigation, and utilities require slower, more careful work. |
Most Austin stump grinding runs $120–$400 per stump for typical sizes, with large heritage stumps and replant-depth grinding higher.

Frequently asked questions
Standard grinding goes 6–10 inches below grade — enough for turf and general landscaping. If you plan to plant a new tree in the same spot, we grind 18 inches or deeper and remove grindings.
Yes, with replant-depth grinding and soil backfill. Planting directly into wood chips causes nitrogen tie-up and poor establishment.
The remaining roots decay over several years. Some species sucker from roots after grinding; we can treat or advise on managing regrowth.
Most residential stumps take 30–90 minutes including setup and cleanup.
