Central Texas soils are alkaline, often shallow, and frequently compacted by construction and foot traffic. Trees growing in urban Austin yards rarely get the leaf litter and biological activity they would have in a natural woodland, so nutrients like iron and manganese become chemically unavailable even when present in the soil.

Deep-root fertilization is a real tool — but only when the diagnosis calls for it. We start with soil and site evaluation, then prescribe accordingly.

When feeding actually helps

Fertilizer is not a cure for drought, root damage, oak wilt, or planting a tree too deep. Applied to a tree with those problems, it wastes money and can even push growth the root system cannot support.

It genuinely helps trees showing nutrient deficiency, urban trees in compacted or nutrient-poor soil, young trees establishing, and mature trees recovering from stress once the underlying issue is corrected.

Local expertise

Austin's soils range from deep blackland clay on the east side to a few inches of soil over limestone in the western hills — the same tree species needs a different program depending on which side of MoPac it grows on.

Iron chlorosis is endemic in high-pH areas and hits red oaks, sycamores, and photinia hardest; chelated iron plus soil acidification gives the best response.

After the extreme summers of recent years, many Austin trees are carbohydrate-depleted. Feeding helps, but only alongside deep, infrequent irrigation.

Fall and late winter are ideal. Fall applications feed root growth during the cool season; late winter supports spring flush. Avoid feeding a drought-stressed tree in mid-summer.

Partially, but lawn programs are formulated for turf and applied shallowly. Deep-root injection places nutrients at feeder root depth beneath the turf layer.

That pattern is classic iron chlorosis, caused by high soil pH locking up iron. Chelated iron treatment plus soil management usually greens the canopy within a season.

Rarely on its own. Diagnosis comes first — if the cause is root damage, disease, or drought, fertilizer will not fix it and may add stress.
